Power Is the New Constraint

For years the AI debate focused on chips. That made sense when the industry was still compute-starved at the hardware layer. But as more capacity gets financed, the bottleneck is shifting. The next great scarcity in AI is not theoretical model demand. It is access to electricity, transmission, and permits.

This is the part of the stack that software investors are least comfortable underwriting because it looks slow, regulated, and physical. That is precisely why it matters.

Why Power Matters More Than Expected

A state-of-the-art AI campus is no longer a warehouse story. It is an energy story. Site selection now depends on substations, utility relationships, land use, interconnection queues, and increasingly on whether backup generation can be secured in time.

That means the best data center operator is not simply the one with available shell capacity. It is the one that can translate capital into megawatts faster than its peers.

The Market Lens

The implication is straightforward: AI infrastructure should be valued more like a constrained utility network than like generic cloud capex. The scarce input is no longer only silicon. It is permissioned energy throughput.

That creates new winners. Utilities with strategic load exposure, developers with shovel-ready campuses, and companies that can solve distributed generation all move closer to the center of the AI investment narrative.

In the next phase of AI, the cheapest watt in the right location may matter more than the next marginal chip benchmark.


The market still treats power as a footnote to the AI trade. I think it is becoming the denominator.
